Draw by Drawing May-August

We are pleased to announce that there will be EIGHT Draw by Drawing online sessions from May to August. The price of individual sessions has increased to $20/session to cover the cost of running these drop-in sessions.

If you register before May 11, you can purchase all eight sessions for $120 ($15/session). In order to qualify for this rate, you must register for all eight of the Draw by Drawing sessions (dates are listed below). You will receive a zoom link on the Tuesday before the Wednesday session. You will also receive a recording after each session, so if you are unable to attend you can watch the recording at a later date.

Topic for each session below will be posted two weeks prior to the upcoming session or right after the current one. The focus for the summer months will be on drawing nature.

Draw by Drawing April 6, 10-11:30am

This week we will be drawing cherry blossoms with chalk pastels. The exercise is partly inspired by Van Gogh’s painting below. We will do two exercises: one will focus on the tree with branches and the other will be an all-over more abstract pattern of cherry blossoms.

Supplies: coloured pastel paper 12 x 17″ (2 sheets), set of chalk pastels, eraser, blending stump, soft rag, small watercolour brush (for blending)

Please note this is the last session for the month of April. There will be a few sessions throughout the summer on Wednesday mornings (due to popular demand) but not on a weekly basis.

Draw by Drawing Wednesday March 23, 10-11:30am

This week’s session is focused on drawing a piece of crumpled paper. We will draw it as a specific shape and then as an all-over pattern to create an abstract mountain range or cliffside.

Materials: sketchbook 14 x 17 sketchbook, range of graphite pencils (HB, B, 2B, 4B, 6B and 8B or anything in this range), eraser, 8 x 11″ piece of copy paper or cardstock (for crushing)

Draw by Drawing March 16, 10-11:30pm

This week’s session is focused on abstract topographic map drawing. This is a great way to learn how to draw beautiful and confident lines with pen and conte crayon. We will be doing two drawings: one with ink and pencil on white paper and another with white conte crayon (or white pastel) on black paper.

Materials: sketchbook 14 x 17 or sheet of smooth drawing paper around that size, bowl-point nib, nib holder and black ink (or any fine black pen you have on hand), 1/4 sheet of black pastel paper (approx 12 x 15″), white conte, graphite pencils, eraser, ruler and pencil sharpener. If you don’t have black paper you can use another colour or just use white paper and black conte crayon.

There always seems to be confusion about what a “bowl-point nib” is -it is a nib you dip into ink that is made by Staedtler and is designed for drawing. They are available at both Island Blue and Opus.
