This week’s topic is drawing an abstract city with watercolour. The focus is on working with geometric shapes and glazes (layering watercolour to create a third colour).

This week’s Draw by Drawing session will focus on using chalk (soft) pastels on coloured paper. The project is inspired by American artist Wolf Kahn and will involve created an abstract landscape with trees.

Materials: set of 12 soft pastels, a pad of coloured pastel paper, 12 x 16″, a rag, eraser and plastic palette knife.

This week’s Draw by Drawing session will focus on using text as source for design and composition.

Materials needed: sketchbook (14 x 17″), a range of graphite pencils (eg. B, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B), eraser and ruler. Also write down five headlines from a newspaper (print or online).

This week’s Draw by Drawing session will focus on drawing plants with ink and brush. Chalk pastels will be used to introduce colour.

Materials needed: black ink, brush (#10 watercolour brush or small bamboo brush), two small containers half full with water, chalk or soft pastels (2 colours is enough), soft cloth for blending, 2-3 cut flowers (buy yourself some flowers or use flowers from the garden)

We are pleased to announce the return of regular weekly sessions of Draw by Drawing on Wednesday mornings. The sessions will be held on a weekly basis until December 8. And then they will continue again in January. There will be a one or two Monday evening “pop-up” sessions in October and November as well for those who can’t make the Wednesday morning ones. More info about those will be on this site or our Draw by Drawing Facebook page.

This week’s focus in on drawing feathers with ink. Exercises will include drawing feathers from observation and creating fantastical imaginary ones with ink patterns.

Materials: black ink, drawing nib and drawing nib holder (if you don’t have this you can use any kind of black pen); sketchbook or loose paper and a couple of feathers (images of feather will be provided via screen sharing if you don’t have any).
